If you are a registering for the first time this year, there is a requirement for a parent in each family to complete the online RIS Parent Programas a condition of the child’s registration and participation in Orangeville Minor Hockey programs.  Many of you have already completed this course, and we thank those that have.  For those that have not, details for getting registered are at the above referenced link.

We look forward to providing an enjoyable playing experience for your children, in line with the guidelines prescribed by Hockey Canada, which you can make reference to at the following link:

In brief:

Hockey Canada developed the Initiation program to make child's first contact with hockey a safe and positive experience. It's a structured, learn-to-play hockey program designed to introduce beginners to the game's basic skills.

The age and skill level of the players defines the seasonal plan. The Hockey Canada skills development programs are based on progressive steps and follow the appropriate allocation of time illustrated in the skill development pyramid.

Goals for the Initiation age category are:

 fun
 introduction of basic skills
 reviewing of basic skills
 refining of basic skills

The Initiation program recommends the following practice time allotment:

 85% technical skills
 15% individual tactics
 0% team tactics
 0% team play
 0% strategy

Typically, with this age group, we need to identify those individuals that have the training and experience to take on the responsibility for player development and/or identify individuals to receive the requisite training.  In order to coach at this level, you need to have the “Coach 1 - Intro to Coach” accreditation and Speakout (or Respect-In-Sport).  To participate on the ice on an ongoing basis you need to have, at a minimum, the Speakout (or Respect-In-Sport) clinic (for those that are 16 years and older).  Clinics can be found at the first link below, and more details on Coach requirements at the second link below:

http://www.omha.net/page/show/885493-clinics

http://www.omha.net/page/show/884931-coaches

It is necessary to take both “Coach 1 - Intro to Coach” and Speak Out (or Respect-In-Sport) clinics to be an official coach or assistant coach, as Speak Out (or Respect-In-Sport) is not included in the Intro to Coach course.

Also note, VERY IMPORTANT, that you must complete the first part of the Coach 1 course on line PRIOR to attending the clinic.

The Community Coach clinic is delivered in two parts. The Participant must first register for the clinic through the OMHA Clinics Listings pageon the OMHA website.

  • In Part A, the Participant completes the 4-hour Hockey University (HU) Online component* before proceeding to;
  • Part B, the in-person clinic which includes 4 hours in-class and 2 hours on-ice.

* Hockey Canada’s Hockey University (HU) is a new, interactive online platform that will form part of a blended learning approach for entry-level clinics of Coach and Official education.

We would also welcome parents of the players to come on the ice at the initial session on Saturday, September 26, to ensure that the children's experience is positive.

All parents and siblings that are over the age of 16, shall wear a CSA approved helmet and skates while on the ice.  Any siblings and other assistants that are under the age of 16 shall wear helmet, mouth guard, skates, gloves and elbow pads, and must be registered as players with Hockey Canada.
